5 Tips In Choosing A College Major
After graduation, one of the better career steps a student can take is college education. It can give them a good future with better opportunities. Some students may even consider getting a bachelor’s degree long before graduation day. Some already have particular majors and preferred universities in mind. But for the majority of graduates, this is least likely the case. Most students are undecided in which major they’ll take. The truth is choosing a major is not as easy as it sounds.
If you face the same problem, don’t worry. It’s actually better that way. By carefully choosing your major, you’ll save a lot of time and energy later on. If you’re still undecided, here are some pointers and tips that’ll help you choose the right major.
1. Examine your interests – The first thing you can consider would be your interests. In what field do you want to work in? What job do you want to take? If you want to be an accountant, you’ll probably take a bachelor’s degree in accounting, right? By following your interest, you’ll likely choose the best major for you.
2. Know your abilities – Considering your interests is not the only examination you’ll have to do. Know your strengths and weakness. We usually excel at subjects concerning our interests. But sometimes, we do better at other things rather than our interests. If this is the case, you should consider what is more important to you, your interests or likes. For some other students who don’t know or don’t have any particular interests, this is their first step in choosing the right major for them.
3. Ask others’ opinions – If you’re unsure of your abilities or don’t have any specific interest, asking for people’s opinion can help. You can ask your family and friends about the major that suits you best. Aside from them, there are many career assessment tests you can take. These can show you in what majors you will likely excel. If you still doubt about a bachelor’s degree that you’ve considered to take, asking an alumni you know will help you understand the major better.
4. Be realistic and know your goals – In examining yourself, you must be realistic about yourself. Is this career path best for you? If indeed you took a bachelor degree in computer science, will you be satisfied with the job opportunities open for you? Are you taking this major just because someone said so or are you really confident about it? These are only some of the many questions you can ask yourself. By knowing yourself better and being true to yourself, you can choose the best major for yourself.
5. Changes are natural – You might have heard about students who change their majors later on. As a result, you may start having doubts. You may even say to yourself, “What if I end up changing major, too?” Well not to worry. These changes commonly occur amongst university students. These changes in majors can actually help you in the end. So never be afraid of these possibilities.
College is one step towards a good future. Choosing the right major can help you succeed in life. Just remember to follow your dreams, go with what you like, and have confidence in your abilities.
